What does society expect of businesses today? We recently had a lucky break finding the near-perfect answer at a flea market, of all places, in the form of a 1958 Benjamin Moore & Co. book titled Foundation for the Future, which celebrated the 75th anniversary of the legendary Brooklyn paint maker. The book, an engaging interpretative story of business management rather than a sterile chronological history of the company, reveals a corporate philosophy striking in its clarity, virtue and significance. Reprinted here is the introduction to the book and its conclusion, with words by B.M. Belcher, who was then President and Chairman of the Board. It outlines a different take on the American system of free enterprise, a vision predicated upon a regard for integrity, respect and uncompromising human values. The contemporary perception on this book equals to nothing less than ‘business porn’ for anyone concerned with sustainable business, good governance and the good society.
Benjamin Moore, 1958
Corporate culture is all the rage these days and this historical artefact from the Benjamin Moore company shows how important corporate value systems have always been.
